Jussie Smollett Appeals Conviction For Staged Hate Crime

Actor Jussie Smollett has filed an appeal the conviction over his infamous staged hate crime. Attorneys for Smollett filed an appeal with the Illinois Supreme Court on Monday, arguing the conviction should be thrown out. In 2019, Smollett – who was best known for a role on the TV series Empire – claimed he was attacked by two masked men who threw bleach on him and hung a noose around his neck.  It was later revealed that he’d staged the attack by hiring two brothers who worked as Empire extras. He was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to 150 days in jail, but was released after six days after filing an appeal.

What made the Jussie Smollett saga such a national obsession?  Do you know anyone who has faked a wild story about themselves?
